Nickel (Agnew) Agreement Act 1974
BHP`s nickel and alumina plants in Washington State, which include the Worsley refinery near Collie, are partially covered by government agreements. A change of ownership should require government approval. Records from the State Department of Development show that in addition to the Nickel Agreement Act of 1974 (Agnew), there is also the Alumina Refinery Agreement Act of 1973 (Worsley). It will bring back memories of four years ago, when the Barnett government used its veto to negotiate a one-time deposit of $350 million from BHP and Rio for the new Perth Children`s Hospital in exchange for changes to the state agreement that would have allowed miners to share rail and port facilities. The pilbara infrastructure joint venture was abandoned for commercial reasons. The AO government appears to be at the center of negotiations between BHP Billiton and potential contenders for its nickel and aluminum divisions, recalling the mining giant`s ill-fat attempt to merge Pilbara`s iron ore operations with arch-rival Rio Tinto. Note: The link to this page has been updated for law_a544.html. Asked yesterday by the opposition in the state parliament whether Barnett could offer job guarantees to affected BHP workers, the prime minister said it was not the government`s job. Versions of this law (including consolidations, reprints, and “as passed”) versions “I understand they have not made a decision, but they are clearly checking whether they .. . sell it,” he said.
“I would have thought they would keep the Worsley, but that`s just my verdict. It is important that these two companies continue to operate and employ employees. Barnett said he hadn`t discussed Worsley with BHP, but the company told him it was looking into the future of Nickel West. .
